The Scientific Programme Committee invites you to submit an abstract for presentation as a free paper at the Australian Society of Anaesthetists 70th National Scientific Congress.

All presentations will be in POSTER FORMAT, except for successful applicants for the Gilbert Troup ASA Prize and Smiths/ASA Young Investigator Awards, who will deliver ORAL presentations.

All posters will automatically be entered for the ASA Best Poster Presentation prizes. You may opt out of consideration for these prizes on the application form. You may apply for the Gilbert Troup Prize or Smiths/ASA Young Investigator Awards if you meet the eligibility criteria below - you must nominate for these on the application form.

Guidelines for Submission:

  • All abstracts are to be submitted via the on-line submission form on this website. Submission by email, fax or post will not be accepted.
  • Abstracts must be no more than 250 words in length and contain information regarding the aims, methods, results and conclusions regarding the research.
  • Do NOT include symbols, tables, pictures or diagrams within the abstract.
  • Any abbreviations must be spelt out on first use.

The receipt of all abstracts will be confirmed by an acknowledging email. All applications will be considered by the NSC Scientific Programme Committee. All applicants will be notified of the success or otherwise of their application within plenty of time to register within the Earlybird Registration phase.

Please note that the space available for all presentations is limited and preference will be given to papers of the highest quality as judged by the Scientific Programme Committee. The NSC attracts a large numbers of submitted papers and the Scientific Committee will look favourably on high quality papers.

ASA Best Poster Presentation Prize

Description: Applicants submit a poster and give a three minute oral presentation at the NSC followed by a question and answer session of up to eight minutes.

Eligibility: The principal content of the poster must not have previously been presented at a national meeting in Australia. Applicants must attend the NSC and give an oral presentation to be eligible to win the prize.

Award: First prize: Certificate and $1000; second prize: certificate and $500; third prize: certificate

Gilbert Troup ASA Prize

This prize was first awarded in 1957 and is the Society's oldest prize. It is awarded to the best free paper within the Gilbert Troup ASA Prize sessions at the NSC

Description: Applicants submit a paper based on original research performed in Australia. A 10 minute oral presentation of the paper, including slides discussing the aims, methods and results of the research, must also be delivered at the NSC. This will be followed by a five (5) minute question period.

Eligibility: Applicants must be an ASA member and the principal content of the paper must not have previously been presented at a national meeting in Australia. The presenter must be one of the authors of the paper. Inclusion for consideration of the Gilbert Troup ASA Prize does not preclude receipt of other awards or prizes.

Award: Medal and $5000

Smiths/ASA Young Investigator Award

Description: Applicants deliver a 10 minute oral presentation at the NSC on research done in the fields of anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine. This will be followed by a five (5) minute question period. The presentation should be illustrated by slides discussing the aims, methods and results of their research.

Eligibility: Applicants must be an ASA trainee, or a specialist within five years of gaining their specialist qualification as at 30 June in the year of application, working in the fields of anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine at a recognised institution. The majority of the research must have been performed in Australia and applicants must not be previous recipients of the award.

Award: Each award is comprised of a certificate and a cash prize for three persons to the value of $5000, $3000 and $1000 respectively for recipients judged first, second and third by the adjudicating panel. The awards will be presented during the NSC, usually prior to the ASA's Annual General Meeting.

GASACT Best Poster Presentation Prize

Description: The GASACT Best Poster Presentation Prize was introduced in 2011 and is only open to GASACT members who present a poster at the National Scientific Congress. GASACT members submit a poster, and if short-listed, give a three minute oral presentation at an NSC GASACT Social Function, followed by a five minute question and answer session. The process will be controlled by the Chairman, but questions will be welcome from GASACT and guests attending the presentations.

Eligibility: All GASACT members are eligible for the GASACT Best Poster Presentation Prize. The principal content of the poster must not have previously been presented at a national meeting in Australia. The format and medium of the poster is at the discretion of the registrar. Award: The prize consists of a Certificate and $1,000. The Prize recipients will be announced and awarded by either the President, Past President, or Education Officer during the NSC.


Registration

All presenters must register to attend the National Scientific Congress and are responsible for their own travel, accommodation and registration expenses.

Anaesthesia and Intensive Care

Selected abstracts may be published in the journal of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. To be considered for publication, it is necessary that the following criteria are met:

  1. The abstract must be original scientific research that has not been published or accepted for publication in whole or part by any journal;
  2. The papers not a review, discussion or general interest article;
  3. The abstract follows the format of a full scientific paper (but in much abbreviated form) including results, conclusions, one or two references and possibly one small figure or table;
  4. The abstract is accompanied by a statement signed by all authors explaining that:
    • all authors have contributed significantly to the paper;
    • the authors assign copyright of the abstract to Anaesthesia and Intensive Care;
    • the work has received appropriate human or animal ethics approval.

The journal will not supply proofs to authors nor enter into correspondence before publication.
